Description: A large tree occurring along streams, rivers and flood plains throughout much of the U.S. One of the first woody species to appear on flood damaged sites. Can be established from cuttings. Often preferred as a roost tree by wild turkey, especially along streams in the western states. Under good conditions, cottonwoods can grow up to 1.5 m in height per year. They are relatively short-lived. The flexible flattened petioles cause the leaves to flutter in the breeeze as do those of a related species, Quaking aspen. |
